In his narrative, the author alludes to a profound affection for animals, particularly a black cat that the anonymous character cruelly mistreats and severely punishes by cutting out one of his eyes and hanging it from a tree while the house is on fire. Later, when he discovers another cat that resembles the first one, his perverted instinct causes him to feel an even stronger hatred for it.
